USA

Peter Urban

Peter Urban is the Patriarch of Goju-Ryu in America. A student of Yamaguchi Sansei, he brought Goju to New York in 1959. Teaching out of the famous "Chinatown Dojo", he was responsible for a considerable percentage of the growth of Martial Arts on the East Coast. Author of The Karate Dojo, and The Karate White Belt.

His organization, USA Goju-Ryu remains strong in the United States. He brought the following katas into the system: American Empi-Ha, Taikyoku-Taikyoku, and Chinese Kururunfa. Grandmaster Urban’s book The Karate Dojo contains many Dojo Stories (the Martial Arts equivalent of "sea stories".) They make nice reading, and contain a large piece of karate’s oral tradition.

Frank Ruiz

Frank Ruiz was a student of Peter Urban. He, Ronald Taganashi, and Harry Rosenstien formed the Nisei Goju-Ryu system. While Grandmaster Ruiz is not specifically in the Sansei lineage, I place him here due to all the help and support he gave Hanshi Saavedra during the formation of Sansei.

Manny Saavedra

Professor Manny Saavedra is the founder of the World Sansei Goju-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Organization. Professor Saavedra trained indirectly under Grandmaster Peter Urban, the founder of American Goju. He received his black belt by training at the famous Chinatown Dojo in New York City.

In 1969, professor Saavedra opened his first Dojo in Corona Queens, New York. In 1972, he moved to South Florida, at which time he brought within the ideas of the World Sansei Goju-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Organization. In 1980 the organization was founded. Since then, Sansei has grown to encompass schools in Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Chile, Ecuador, Israel, South Africa, and United States. In addition to the schools in the U.S., Sansei has karate programs in place at five different universities. Professor Saavedra has been an instructor at the university level for the past sixteen years in both Florida and New York. He is developed many new techniques and ideas in the art of self-defense and has expanded his method of training to cover the present day American form of living, thinking, and training.
